Disturbing Michigan Foreclosure Figures Prompt Grassroots Movement!
With the Michigan foreclosure rate reaching alarming levels, one local community organization is intensifying its efforts to stop foreclosure in the state.
Local members of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) will be participating in a new outreach program providing housing counseling and assistance with loan restructuring for Michigan households facing foreclosure.
Just how urgent is the need to stop foreclosure in Michigan?
In April, the Joint Economic Committee of Congress released a report ranking Michigan fifth among states with the greatest percentage of foreclosures per household. Specifically, the report detailed that one of out of every 52 homes is in the process of foreclosure in Michigan.
The reported added that there were more than 10,000 foreclosures in Detroit alone last year. About five times the national average, Detroit had the most foreclosures per household of any metro area in the country in 2006. The Georgia metro combination of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and Marietta finished second behind Detroit.
The Joint Economic Committee of Congress report attributed unemployment and the struggling auto industry as the primary culprit behind the staggering Detroit foreclosure figures.
Overall, the Michigan foreclosure rate per household in 2006 was only behind Texas, Nevada, Georgia and Colorado, which had the dubious distinction of coming in first on this list with a startling average of one foreclosure per three households in the state.
And things have not been too promising so far this year in the Wolverine State! A recent ABC12.com story detailed that more than 400,000 homes landed in Michigan foreclosure during the last three months.
With such disturbing statistics in mind, local ACORN members are trying to lend a helping hand to those Michigan families who desperately need to stop foreclosure. The group will go door-to-door throughout the state and answer the questions of families about how they can stop foreclosure in Michigan. The organization also plans to educate the homeowners on foreclosure rescue red flags that they should be aware of!
This grassroots movement is a part of a national effort by the organization to help stop foreclosure. As just one example, Colorado members of ACORN plan to visit families on the verge of Denver foreclosure because of predatory loans and consolidate them to fight back for their homes.
ACORN is also pushing hard for legislation which would not only stop foreclosures in Michigan and Colorado but also throughout the United States. Specifically, the organization is proposing new foreclosure laws that would seek restraining orders and injunctions to stop foreclosures resulting from predatory lending.
